Highlights of Faculty Task Force Recommendations : Sabbaticals

  • Make sabbaticals virtually automatic based on accrued service.
  • Establish a true sabbatical system along the lines of the U of California model.
  • Guarantee each faculty member a full-pay, year-long sabbatical after every seven years of accrued service (except when too many faculty in one department become eligible at the same time).
  • Guarantee that if a sabbatical must be “deferred,” the faculty member receives the second sabbatical “earlier.”
  • Guarantee other sabbatical options paid on a prorated basis, based on years of accrued service.
  • Eliminate uncertainty in the application and awards process.
  • Reduce bureaucracy in the application and awards process.
  • Establish parallel, integrated, predictable procedures for the separate kinds of leaves.
  • Mandate payment to departments to compensate faculty on sabbatical.
