Highlights of Faculty Task Force Recommendations : Tenure & Promotion
- For ease of use, parallel, wherever appropriate, the procedures of the Tenure article with those of the Promotion article.
- Update T & P rights and procedures to parallel the practices at top-tier universities.
- Mandate that the percentage of tenured and tenure-earning positions will not fall below current levels.
- Retain the traditional probationary period for tenure, consistent with top-tier universities. Make the current annual "tenure appraisals" binding as interim assessments of achievement.
- Mandate provisions for stopping a faculty memberıs ³tenure clock² that are consistent with top-tier universities, and guarantee that those options cannot be vetoed by the Administration.
- Guarantee that faculty who take leave are not discriminated against in tenure and promotion decisions.
- Make T & P procedures clearer, more precise, uniform across the University, and easier to understand.
- Ensure that 3-year reviews, if used, are conducted in each department/college according to fair and equitable procedures.
- Guarantee that 3-year reviews are instructive and are not used to institute a second tenure review in order to fire faculty prior to their rightful consideration for tenure.
- Guarantee that faculty may go up early for tenure and/or promotion without prejudice. Remove the possibility that administration can block early consideration for tenure or promotion. Permit faculty to withdraw their applications without prejudice until the Provost formally presents the report of the Academic Personnel Board.
- Mandate that departments adapt the general T & P criteria to their specific disciplinary requirements and standards, and that T & P criteria be matched to the faculty memberıs actual assignment. Specify that the same criteria apply to both tenure and promotion.
- Define T & P criteria so that both faculty and administrators will know exactly what needs to be done. Guarantee that faculty cannot be adversely affected by a change in T & P criteria during their probationary period.
- Safeguard T & P file, restricting when & how materials may be added, altered, or deleted.
- Increase the promotion raise to 15% and that it remain equal to or greater in percentage than the promotion raise at any other Florida university.
- Guarantee that promoted faculty receive their promotion raise on top of any other raises.
